"Enter the Chicken". A title like that could be taken a number of ways. Buckethead?returns, and?this time he drags his friends along for the ride. With friends like Serj Tankian (from System of a Down) and Saul Williams, 'Enter the Chicken' ranges from the psychotically heavy to mellow and laid back.

Enter the Chicken'We are one' features Serj Tankian on vocals, is exactly the type of song you would expect from a Buckethead/Serj collaboration, and combines the frenetic guitar playing and vocals they are best known for. The album shifts gears when it hits 'Coma', a track that is so groove orientated and peaceful that you would hardly believe it was written by the same guy. 'Nottingham Lace' is an instrumental that features the trademark Buckethead shredding sure to impress old school fans.

The standout track is 'Three Fingers' with Saul Williams. It also appears on the Saw 2 soundtrack and has an infectious quality to it. I hadn't heard Saul Williams before this, but having heard him on this track, I'm keen to hear more. For me, the album starts to drop off toward the end, and I found the vocals in 'The Hand' and 'Funbus' a little to guttural for my liking.

Overall, this album is solid, and marks a departure from the schlock/horror style employed by Buckethead in the past. There is nothing on here that approaches the creepy and disturbing 'The Ballad of Inside-Out Face" ditty. The album does have some low points, however the weaker tracks can be overlooked, simply because the standout tracks... standout! Wow, that was deep. If I had to sum this up with one word I would use 'diverse'.

LEAVE A RESPONSE

I like it when people leave comments. It makes me feel warm inside. What I don't like is when I receive comments from people with robot sounding names like "free web hosting" or "North Carolina Real Estate". Names like these will trigger the SPAM alarm at Pickles HQ, and likely get deleted. In summary, comments that look like an attempt to do nothing more than build back links will be deleted. Thanks for your understanding ~ swollenpickles.
