Made for Adsense (MFA) sites are set to overtake SPAM as the scourge of the internet. MFA sites are generally made up of a couple of pages targeting high paying Google keywords and are designed for the sole purpose of having visitors to the website clicking on advertisements.

Mesothelioma (or Mesothelioma treatment or Mesothelioma lawyers) is an example of a high paying keyword, reportedly paying out at in excess of $40 per click not too long ago. As a result, tens of thousands of Mesothelioma sites sprung up overnight. To be honest, until the MFA phenomenon I did not even know what Mesothelioma was. Mesothelioma is described on wikipedia as "a form of cancer that is almost always caused by previous exposure to asbestos. A mesothelioma is a highly aggressive tumor that is generally deadly."

I've been asked why people build MFA sites, and what makes them profitable?

How do MFA exponents make money from targeting a keyword such as Mesothelioma? Firstly they generate a quick page or two, providing very little content but packed with references to the high paying keyword.

That's fine, but how do they get visitors to their crappy contentless sites? They'll use Google Adwords (or even a lower cost option) to buy in visitors to their site. MFA exponents won't purchase ads focusing on Mesothelioma as a keyword, obviously this wouldn't be profitable. Instead they will target low paying related keywords. Perhaps misspellings of the terms or more specific keywords related to the topic, in the case of Mesothelioma, they may buy ads targeting keywords related to the symptoms or treatment of the disease. To put it simply they'll buy traffic to their site using keywords that will cost them as little as possible (we are talking cents here), in the hope that visitors will have no other options but to click on an ad on there MFA site which results in a $40 payout for the site owner.

Whilst it may not be illegal as such, in my opinion, it is definitely not ethical! It grinds my gears. I can ignore most MFA type sites and write them off as rubbish without a second thought, but the thought of people profiting from the illness of others sickens me. If someone is searching for information on Mesothelioma, then chances are either they, or someone they care about, is going through some pretty heavy stuff. In that case they don't need to be forced to search through page after page of useless crap just so someone else can make a quick buck. I just see this kind of thing as people profiting from the misery of others. I don't have any problem with people making money using Adsense, PayPerPost, ReviewMe, Yahoo or whatever. I do have a problem with people using the misfortune of others for personal gain.

That's it, rant over, sorry to get serious.

It’s true that most mesothelioma sites on the Internet are worthless. However, the best one, http://www.mesothel.com, has treatment information, patient profiles, and legal advice. It was the first web site dedicated to mesothelioma and has been around since 1996.

Are we witnessing the death of adsense? | Swollen Pickles

[...] With the way things are going I think the days of people proudly holding up their $100,000 adsense cheques and smiling for the camera are well and truly past. Who knows what’s causing the drop? Some people blame the made for adsense sites that pop up like noxious weeds but I’m not sure that’s the sole cause. Even filtering out these sites has made little difference to me. This trend is making other options like PayPerPost look very appealing for people who have relatively low volume traffic websites. I like it when people leave comments. It makes me feel warm inside. What I don't like is when I receive comments from people with robot sounding names like "free web hosting" or "North Carolina Real Estate". Names like these will trigger the SPAM alarm at Pickles HQ, and likely get deleted. In summary, comments that look like an attempt to do nothing more than build back links will be deleted. Thanks for your understanding ~ swollenpickles.
