For the second time in a row Colin Farrell has let me down. First it was Miami Vice, a long, slow and boring effort, that totally destroyed a concept that had potential. Farrell’s second strike is The New World. I just finished up watching the 130 minute epic and now I’m tired. The official website describes The New World as an historical adventure. Clearly this description is the work of a publicist with an over active imagination. The New World has far more in common with a period romance/drama, than it does with any ‘historical adventures’ that I’ve seen.

A basic summary of The New World; John Smith and some other English settlers land on American soil in the 17th century. John Smith hooks up with Pocahontas. They fall in love. Native Americans and English settlers clash. John Smith is sent on a mission elsewhere, leaving Pocahontas behind, and instructions for someone to tell her that he is dead once he’s been gone for 2 months (I guess breaking up in the 17th century was no different to present day?). John Smith still loves her, Pocahontas still loves him. Christian Bales character moves in to the New World. Thinking John Smith dead, Pocahontas marries Christian Bale and has his child, only to learn John Smith is not really dead after all… but who will she choose???

Drama, intrigue, action! This movie contained none of those things. It was far too long, and far too little to happened. The next movie I see that has Colin Farrell in it better be good or else I’m putting him on my movie going black list!

Would I recommend this movie? Well I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone I liked, that’s for sure. Hire it if you’re looking for a slow snooze fest. If you’re after ‘historical adventure’ look elsewhere.
