Sunshine isn’t the brightest of films. I’d hardly describe it as uplifting. Perhaps I had just read one too many positive reviews of the film, or perhaps I was just tired?

Set in the not so distant future, Sunshine focuses on a group of eight astronauts as they take on the mission of trying to kick start the dying sun. It’s as much a space/sci-fi film as much as it is a psychological study of what may happen if you were to spend a little too much time on your own. The film starts off slowly, picking up pace in the middle, before spluttering to a disappointing end, that seems to throw the psychological elements of the film out the window in favor of some B grade slasher movie action.

I’m sure there was a message in there somewhere, I’m just not sure that I got it. I spent most of the time scratching my head, at times the film asked you to really take it seriously, as if the science behind it had be applied studiously. The next minute you’re asked to believe that it’s possible for a deep fried guy to survive for 7 years alone in space with only his festering scabs to keep him company? Sunshine swings from high brow think piece to dodgy slasher film within the blink of an eye.

I really wanted to like this movie, after all the positive things I’d heard about it, I was expecting a lot more. If you go to see this one, do yourself a favor, don’t read any of the reviews, if you do, you may walk away thinking that it is all a little… *cough*… over rated!
