Thanks to the advice of Deaf Musician, I'm put together a list of blogs that are running themes that I like, or more specifically feature elements I would like to incorporate into my 'perfect' theme. Amongst other things, a lot of blogs listed are ones that I read regularly (or at least when I get the time), so even if your not interested in WordPress themes, you may find this list useful for finding blogs you may not have discovered otherwise.
Whilst in many ways it has a simple and traditional style layout, what I like most about the theme used on this blog is the post extracts at the top of the theme. The section I'm talking about is the green section just below the header banner seen in the screen shot below.

I'd like to incorporate something similar and use it to display the title and brief introduction for either a couple of random posts (that would change upon refreshing the page) or a couple of the most popular posts (based on a WP plugin).
While this blog is no longer being updated, the design element I like is still being used by the other blogs in the weblogsinc network. The footer is used as a place to include links to latest stories on other blogs within their network. You can get an idea from the image below.

I'd like to incorporate a similar function, however using a different style, and not as many links and blogs. For me, this make the footer more 'useful'.
I like the clean look of SimpleBits, as well as its useful footer. I like it's simplicity.

Whilst I only found this blog because of a comment in a previous post (see comments do pay off!), I like it for it's three column layout, as well as using the header as a category 'cloud'. It still looks like a header, but makes the most of the space by keeping it useful. I'm big on useful, can't you tell?

The other thing I like is how the referral links appear to be internal links but then shoot you off to the actual site. I really need to learn how to do that.
I like the 'order' of the ordered list front page. I don't think it would work for Swollen Pickles, I just mention it cause I think it looks pretty cool.
