How to view a ‘blocked site’

Here's a useful piece of information if you spend most of your day in front of a computer that has 'restricted access' to the internet. In other words, if you work somewhere that has blocked websites like facebook and myspace, then you'll probably be interested in this crude little work around.

Now this solution isn't high tech, but it should generally work.

Google has a translation service available which allows to to translate a website from one language to another. Effectively, what this does is open the requested web page within a Google hosted frame. So, how do you take advantage of this service to view a blocked site?

Use the Google translation service to do an English to English translation. The direct URL you can use to do this is:

http://google.com/translate?langpair=en|en&u=www.swollenpickles.com

Obviously replace to www.swollenpickles.com with whatever address it is you want to visit (eg. facebook or whatever). This may also work with other translation services, but I haven't tried any others.  I don't believe this is effective in overcoming blocked streaming content either.

Well, my company’s pretty secured. This won’t work here. It can detect that I am using a proxy to bypass the security policy. :-)

Bad luck traveller. It probably won’t work for quite a few people, but I’m sure not all companies are secure as yours! :p
