Secret War is a Marvel mini-series that, as the blurb says, "reveals the darkest chapter in Marvel Universe history!". The Secret War trade paperback combines entire Secret War run (Secret War #1-5), plus From the Files of Nick Fury.

In terms of the plot, the story centres around Nick Fury gathering together a group of some of the meanest Marvel heroes (including Wolverine, Daredevil and Luke Cage), for a top secret black ops mission in Latveria.

The story starts with Luke Cage hospitalized and on the brink of death following an attempt on his life. We later learn that Nick Fury and Captain America led Luke Cage, along with Spider-Man, Wolverine, Daredevil, and Black Widow to Latveria on a 'secret war', unsupported by the US government, against those in Latveria supplying 'technology themed' villains with their technology.

The story ties in nicely with the Marvel Civil War story arc, and goes a long way in explaining why Nick Fury is barely heard from throughout the Civil War. I think it's safe to say that following the events of The Secret War, there were a lot of people mighty pi$$ed off at good ol' Nick.

In terms of the artwork, it's solid, although not in a traditional comic sense. It appears as if the artwork was painted rather than drawn, if that makes sense. The trade paper back is 256 pages and well worth a read for the hardcore Marvel nut. For those with only a passing interest, it's probably not a required read for you to understand what's happening in the Marvel Universe.

I'll give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 pickles.

While your rating is very good, the theme does not appeal to my tastes. Well written review though. My compliments.

This should not be confused with the Marvel Secret Wars mini-series (1984). I recommend it.

Good point Wormbrain. The 80’s version and this one aren’t connected from what I understand (not that I’ve read the 80’s version).
