A magic eye puzzle thingy that freaks me out

Here's a magic eye puzzle type thing I found while checking my Entrecard inbox. Generally eye puzzle and/or 3D stuff drives me flipping crazy. This one is no exception.

Take a look at the image below. It's a checkers (or chess) style board with a large cylinder sitting on it. Take a good look at the image. Pay particular attention to the two sections marked 'A' and 'B'. Now answer this, are blocks 'A' and 'B' the same colour?

The Shadow

After staring at this for a while, there was no way that I could say 'A' and 'B' were the same colour, no matter how I approached it. Being the untrusting, sometime skeptic that I am, I opened the image in Photoshop and used the 'eye dropper' tool to find out what colour the two blocks were. Sure enough, they were both exactly the same colour (HEX # 787878). I have to admit, it's quite cool, but at the same time I think it may have fried my brain.

    This is cool.
I did the eyedropper thing as well and I still don’t believe it.

how is that possible? is that not possible?

  3. I can’t believe it either – you got me how they did it !

The way that they get you is with all those other distractions in the picture. If you cover everything but block A with your hands and then slide it down to block B, you will see that block A and block B are, indeed, the same color. This happens, because our eyes fool the brain into continuing a pattern, such as the checkered pattern that is seen on chess boards. (You can read how this happens here: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/3051612.cms)

The dark squares around B are darker than A b/c they are also in the shadow. But people just assume b/c of the pattern that they are the same color as A and since B is lighter than those around it they assume B is lighter than A.

What’s worse is, using Photoshop, I snipped a piece of block A, and dragged it down to block B — the dang thing seemed to change color.

    Crazy.

I erased everything in the picture but blacks A and B, and, sure enough, same colour.
