I erased everything in the picture but blacks A and B, and, sure enough, same colour.

What’s worse is, using Photoshop, I snipped a piece of block A, and dragged it down to block B — the dang thing seemed to change color.

Crazy.

The dark squares around B are darker than A b/c they are also in the shadow. But people just assume b/c of the pattern that they are the same color as A and since B is lighter than those around it they assume B is lighter than A.

The way that they get you is with all those other distractions in the picture. If you cover everything but block A with your hands and then slide it down to block B, you will see that block A and block B are, indeed, the same color. This happens, because our eyes fool the brain into continuing a pattern, such as the checkered pattern that is seen on chess boards. I did the eyedropper thing as well and I still don’t believe it.
