The Dark Knight movie review

I'm glad to report that The Dark Knight lived up to both the hype, and my high expectations. I saw it in a sold out cinema on Sunday night, and three days on, I'm still buzzed.

The film ran for just over 150mins, but there was not a single moment where I felt compelled to check my watch. The film was 'gritty' and 'dark', everything a Batman movie should be. Paired with Batman Begins, these two movies have done enough to erase the terrible 1990's Batman outings from my mind.

Without trying to outline the entire plot, The Dark Knight covers the emergence of the Joker as well as the idea that Gotham City has two protectors, Harvey Dent as the White Knight to Batman's Dark Knight. A large part of the film deals with Batman/Bruce Wayne positioning Harvey Dent as the hero that Batman could never be, with a view to retiring the Batman persona.

Much of the film builds upon the relationship between Batman, Harvey Dent and Commissioner Gordon, and in that respect shares something in common with The Long Halloween graphic novel.

There's a lot of character development, a couple of shocks, and enough happening to keep the non-comic fan more than entertained.

A lot has been written about Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker, and I have to admit, prior to seeing the film I was a little sceptical. Was he going to be that good, or was the praise partly due to his passing? I can now say that all the reports are true. Ledger turned in a phenomenal performance, that leaves you freaked out, and in awe, as well as wondering where this role may have taken his career had he been alive today.

The Joker is creepy in every way, truly deranged and hell bent on causing chaos. If the Joker ever asks if you'd like to see a magic trick, your answer should be no! The Joker's origins aren't explored at all, and his past is rarely touched upon, besides some conflicting stories he tells himself. This is how the Joker should be.

The story centers on the rise of Harvey Dent as much as it does on the characters of Batman and the Joker. The character of Rachel Dawes is not as prominent as in the first film, and she serves more as a plot device rather than anything else.

I have no hesitation in awarding The Dark Knight the highest honor bestowed on any film, I'm giving it 5 out of 5 pickles. Best 'comic book' movie ever made.

If you loved the Dark Knight, you might be interested in picking up copies of a couple of Batman graphic novels that the film seems to have drawn elements from.

I just saw it man. It was good! HAHAHAHAHA Heath Ledger was completely amazing in this movie. I normally don’t like his movies (because they’re typically chick-flicks, which is ok, but not enough chaos to satisfy me). The Order was pretty good. It’s kind of scary just how into a character other than a persons self one can get into…

You know Terminator 4 trailer is out? It’s got Christian Bale :D
