Duplicity movie review

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Duplicity: deceitfulness in speech or conduct; speaking or acting in two different ways concerning the same matter with intent to deceive; double-dealing. Duplicity is also a film that follows the escapades of two corporate spies, Clive Owen and Julia Roberts. Both characters are former secret service agents from their respective countries (CIA and MI-6) who retire from their state funded duties to move into the private sector. They share a romantic history, which leads them to hatch a plot to manipulate two corporate giants in order to obtain profit themselves and fund their own lavish lifestyle.

I can't say much more without giving the film away, but I will say that there are that many twists and turns going on here that at times it was hard to keep up.

I've seen Duplicity described as a romantic comedy thriller. It's definitely got a lot of the spy/thriller thing happening, and some romance, but I wouldn't describe it as being a comedy. It's basically a laugh free film, so if you're expecting a standard Julia Roberts rom-com then you'll be in for disappointment. You could describe Duplicity as a film about corporate espionage, or alternatively a love story focusing on the relationship between a couple that lie for a living.

My major complaint with Duplicity is that it run about 25-30mins too long, wearing out its welcome, and features one too many twists. I kept waiting for the bit shocking twist at the finale, but by the time it came around, I was over all the twisting, and the conclusion left me a little underwhelmed.

Overall, Duplicity is a decent film that loses its way. I'd give it 2 out of 5.

The Machine Girl looks awesome

Friday, March 27th, 2009

I may have discovered the ultimate movie. The Machine Girl is a 2008 Japanese action/horror/comedy about a young Japanese schoolgirl, whose life is turned upside down when her brother is killed by a the son of a high ranking Ninja/Yakuza.

Apparently, she gets her hand cut off. Obviously she is now able to channel the spirit of Ash from the Evil Dead movies as she goes on to replace her hand with a massive gun, along with an assortment of other instruments of death, and goes on a bloody revenge style rampage.

I really want to see this one, so I'm going to try and track it down this weekend. Until then, I'll just have to make do with one of the most awesome trailers I've seen in recent memory. It's got a little bit of everything, including ninjas.

Aliens vs Predator challenges

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Here are some pretty cool, for sci-fi geeks anyway, print ads produced by New Zealand advertising agency DDB New Zealand, to promote the screening of Aliens vs. Predator when it was on SKY TV. As a massive Predator, and Alien, fan boy, I love this stuff. My personal favorite is Alien vs. Predator totem tennis. I've always thought that totem tennis is a brutal sport, and this just goes to prove it.

Flight of the Conchords vs David Bowie

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

If you had to describe the TV show Flight of the Conchords in one word, what would it be? I'm going to have to go with "quirky". Even though I hate that word, it's the first one that pops into my tiny under developed brain.

If you've never heard of the show before, allow wikipedia to provide you with a nice little synopsis.

Flight of the Conchords is an Emmy Award-nominated television comedy series that follows the adventures of the Flight of the Conchords, a folk duo from New Zealand, as its members seek fame and success in New York City. The show portrays a fictionalized version of the real-life duo, Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, who play themselves.

Anyway, it just so happens that I also have a David Bowie fascination. So what happens when Flight of the Conchords have inter-relations with David Bowie? This...

Celebrating the first sale

Friday, March 20th, 2009

I've been a member of MoreNiche for a while now, initially drawn in due to their generous sign up bonus. A while ago I set up a poker site, to see how the MoreNiche, WassPoker, product would go. Today I officially recorded my first sale.

It may be due to the current WassPoker offer "get 100% up to $500 on your first bonus". In any case, I'm pretty happy, hopefully it's the first of many.

WassPoker

If you haven't heard of MoreNiche before, it's an affiliate program that is definitely worth joining. They give you money just for joining. Yup, they are giving away up to 45$ for new signups as bonuses! Money for nothing, Dire Straits style.

Will Ferrell Oscar Night Fun

Friday, March 13th, 2009

Generally I find musicals lame, with the odd exception. What I find even worse is the song and dance shenanigans at the Oscars. It makes me cringe to the point where I feel a shiver run up the back of my spine.

The one exception, is when Will Ferrell is involved.

I found this during random surfing. Check out the golden god of comedy at the 76th Academy Awards.

And a little more from the 79th Academy Awards.

How to be awesome – tip 1

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

Do you want to know what's awesome? When someone in an open plan office (eg. no walls!) decides to hold a conference call on a speaker phone and then proceeds to have a conversation about how it's nice that we are getting some rain. Here's the tip, everyone else in your office will love listening to your inane chatter, and the spluttering from the speaker phone. It's lovely. (more...)
