Mysterious Cities of Gold
For some reason this afternoon I started singing "Cities of Gold", my own interpretation of the "Mysterious Cities of Gold" theme song. Raise your hand if you watched Cities of Gold as a kid... Cities of Gold was one of my favorite cartoons from the 80's. It was set in the 1500's and followed the adventures of a little Spanish kid called Esteban. Esteban hooked up with a little group and joined the search for one of the Seven Cities of Gold in the hope that he'd find his father there.
The show was a little like Indiana Jones with a few science fiction elements thrown in for good measure. The series was produced in 1982-83 and ran for a total of 39 episodes.
Check out the opening theme. Watching it causes me to regress to a five year old version of myself.
When I was looking up Cities of Gold I found out that a movie version is potentially in the works. Apparently Movie Plus Group acquired the rights to the story from NHK in 2007 and announced that they would be producing a full length feature film based on the original story. , with the intention of looking at a sequel if the film proved successful. The film was supposedly going to enter production in 2008, but I'm not sure whether or not that eventuated. Further details can probably be found here, although I can't confirm that, as I don't speak French.
Three new seasons of 26 episodes each are also rumored to be in progress, with production supposedly beginning in late 2009, with the first season set to hit the screen in 2011.
Something I didn't realise until yesterday was that the people behind Cities of Gold are the same people that brought the world Ulysses 31. Ulysses 31 was another cartoon from the very early 1980's. It borrowed heavily from Homer's Odysseus, or basically just supplanted that story into the 31st century. The post-it not version of the plot goes something like this. Ulysses angers the gods by killing the giant Cyclops, which he did to save some kids. As punishment, Zeus freezes the crew of Ulysses ship, the Odyssey. The only way that Ulysses can save his crew and return home to Earth is by finding the Kingdom of Hades.
Ulysses 31 only ran for 26 episodes, but they were all quality! :p
Check out the Ulysses 31 opening theme...

I recently came by a copy of Mysterious Cities of Gold and I’m going to dedicate some time watching it because I never saw the end of the series.
The other show you mention is one that I AM currently watching Ulysses which indeed has the greatest opening song of all time!
Here’s the rough translation
17/09/2009: Interview Hadrian Soulez-Lariviere for http://www.LesCitesdOr.com
As promised (see this news), here is an interview Hadrian Soulez-Lariviere, screenwriter, responsible for writing the next 3 seasons Cities of Gold. Wanting to learn more about their background and how he arrived on the project, I asked him some questions, which he gladly answered.
Lonely Planet: Who are you? What is your profession?
Hadrian: I left the ESRA (film school) in 1997 and since then I have worked on shoots for commercials, TV movies, and I made short films. I am a writer since 2001, mainly for the cartoons (The Queen Sun, Titeuf SamSam, The Apprentice Father Christmas). [Editor's note: further information on its website]
Lonely Planet: What is your interest in following in preparation?
Hadrian: I was hired to write the bible of three new seasons of Mysterious Cities of Gold. A “bible” is the reference document, which describes the universe in the series, its characters and lines of action. After the Bible, I was asked to write the synopsis of the twenty-six episodes of Season 2. All this represents a year’s work. It begins now writing sequencia and the first two new scripts with writers, Nicolas and Sylvie.
Lonely Planet: Do you work on writing alone or in tandem with Jean Chalopin?
Hadrian: I write alone, but I am surrounded. Jean Chalopin living abroad, I see him when he comes to Paris and we talk by phone. The two program advisors TF1 follow my work. Valerie, the director of development at Blue Spirit is my main interlocutor. Jean-Luc, who heads the design aspect of this series, I often give her advice, and Bernard Deyriès, co-author and director of the original series. All these people have read all my books since the beginning of writing.
Lonely Planet: How were you chosen? Have you offered to be part of this project?
Hadrian: Sometimes the best projects that come most easily. I knew Valerie, because we failed to work together. When the draft of a response to Cities of Gold has materialized, she contacted me and I immediately said “yes”! Then I met Jean Chalopin, the endorsement was of course essential.
Lonely Planet: Did you know the original series? What is your critical eye on it?
Hadrian: a child I watched the cities of gold between an episode of Captain Harlock and Inspector Gadget. I know so well the series. But I did not especially critical to what I am faced with the challenge to write a sequel! Today, I realize how this is a great series.
Backpacker: You get inspired from the first set to the tone of the writing, or do you give a new impetus for a more contemporary audience?
Hadrian: What I was immediately attracted to this project is that it was not a remake or an adaptation, but a sequel. What will surprise most people is to see our heroes no longer in Latin America, but Asia! Furthermore, it is necessary that those who have not seen the original season can follow the news. And what will happen. But everything is done to create continuity between the original series and more. We find our young hero, the atmosphere of mystery, wonder, travel, friendship!
Lonely Planet: Can you tell us some extra info (we know already long, following the words of John Chalopin that we will return to the old series to move to China and Japan).
Hadrian: I went to your forum [Editor's note: see here] and I found that most of the questions that were asked were very relevant! I can indeed confirm Esteban and Zia have not recovered the central medallion they used to open the doors of the first city, it would be too easy! Regarding the hiding places of the cities, a “Routard” is pretty much inspired. In any case, one of his proposals is correct. As the official summary that you published on your site, it suggests the arrival of new characters …
Lonely Planet: After three further seasons, the 7 cities of gold will be discovered: the end of the series is it already written? Jean Chalopin he had already anticipated an end to the era of the first round?
Hadrian: No, the end was not written and we always talk about. Jean Chalopin, and we all want to ensure that spectators were not disappointed! What I can tell you is that the “mythology” around the cities of gold will be thorough. Get ready!
25/08/2009: Following the Cities of Gold advance … but in silence!
As promised (see this news), here’s some news on the progress of the project, Live at Blue Spirit (again, thank you to Valerie). The 2011 date is still valid. The lack of information does nothing wrong, however: the team would simply filter the information to prevent false rumors and spoilers (and preserve some surprises!).
What can be said of the play: “[...] bible Season 2 is confirmed by TF1, Jean and Bernard Chalopin Deyriès with the full narrative arc of season 2. The synopses are also validated and we enter the stage of sequencia (detailed text without dialogue cut scene to scene). We do not yet ready script.
In fact, he had to take time to determine the secrets of the 6 cities of gold remaining and we see where the story ends. We started the graphic just this summer. For now, all is not communicable. However, we have an excellent designer who makes us beautiful scenery and we are moving well on the characters. This week Bernard Deyriès comes to work with us with the graphic [...]”
That’s good news then, for those who asked the question, Bernard Deyriès is fully involved in the project. Secondly, I hope that the visuals will be available this fall (Figure validation and agreement from all project stakeholders are necessary before we can release anything whatsoever).
A Interiew of Hadrian Soulez-Lariviere, writer of the following series is online. For the record, this is just one year – from August 25, 2008 – he is working on writing more.
Finally, here’s the official summary of the first three seasons to come, in which new characters and new historical elements are introduced. As we already know, the action takes place in Asia.
“Flagship series of the 80s, the success of” Mysterious Cities of Gold “has never faltered. This great adventure series telling the extraordinary journey of three children, Esteban, Zia and Tao, in Latin America’s 16th century and ended with the discovery of one of the seven legendary cities of gold.
The long awaited sequel recounts the discovery of six other cities hidden around the world. Esteban, Zia, Tao and his parrot Pichu, travel aboard the Great Condor, a fabulous golden bird can fly through the solar energy. As in the original series, adventure, wonder and mystery will be at the rendezvous.
In season 2, Esteban, Zia and Tao discovered two new cities, one in China, one in Japan. If we find in their wake Mendoza, Pedro and Sancho, their adventures are also accompanied by a new actor, an alchemist who seems to have discovered some secrets of the old empire of Mu, which descends Tao. Their journey to the Cities of Gold is not without pitfall: here, they face a war without thank you among lords there, they barely escaped from pirates. In addition it seems that few shadows lurking at every turn, like the terrible Zares, a mysterious being who works in the shadow of Charles V … ”
16/01/2009: interview with Blue Spirit for http://www.LesCitesdOr.com
After confirmation of a sequel to the Mysterious Cities of Gold in 2011, controlled by TF1 (see below), I inquired at the side of Blue Spirit, French animation company that co-produce the series with 3 Future Movie more. A big thank you to Valerie, head of development following the Cities of Gold at Blue Spirit, for taking the time to answer my questions.
The comments below were collected by mail on 15/01/09. I simply allowed to cut or take certain passages, so far without distorting his remarks.
Lonely Planet: “Hello, can you give us some further specify the following Cities of Gold as expected?”
Valerie: “There is currently too early to provide information on the series. We are rapidly developing literary and therefore full construction (1). We are currently in development agreement with TF1 (and therefore not yet in production), which also lasts almost until end 2009. The graphical development has not started yet because we must first validate the Bible. We do not show anything that has been validated previously by TF1 and Jean Chalopin, which may intervene in any development purpose.
It also seems imperative to avoid spoilers as we will be very vigilant about the information that we distilled. The series is a serial and reserving a certain number of surprises and revelations, we want to keep some mystery and cultivate envy viewer. The level of writing the series is very ambitious and demand a lot of work.
What I can say for now is that season 2 will be held in Asia, we will discover 2 cities of gold and that we reserve some crucial revelations. (2)
I realize that fans are hungry for information but I ask you patience as we have before us 3 years of work before the series is on the screen. [...]”
Lonely Planet: “The frustration comes from the fans, the confirmation of a sequel has been repeatedly announced and then denied.”
Valerie: “I totally understand the frustration! I myself worked in another structure on a sequence of Cities of Gold there are 6 or 7 years (with Bernard Deyriès) and the project has not have been possible. It must be understood – and there is perhaps a little teaching to do with the fans – that production constraints are multiple and especially financial. At the time, no chain did not want . No chain, no funding, then! Even for professionals, it is sometimes difficult to understand why a project did not favor the chains at a time T and why he arouses interest a few years later. As for OLS, it is partly due to the changing media landscape: the chains now face such competition with new media as their audience has dramatically lowered and thus are more eager products notoriety predetermined. C ‘ is therefore a matter of circumstances among others but also because the phenomenon of cult animation series of the 80s emerged precisely in this period which gave favorable reception of a following for OLS. The other important aspect is the series (3): chains generally do not like the animated series serials (for various reasons). A series [...] could not otherwise be envisaged and should therefore convince chain of the merits of this bias. ”
Lonely Planet: “Will you on fan sites, especially the latter (with an average age of visitors is 30 years)?”
Valerie: “[...] It is important to communicate but it must be done properly. We must also understand that we produce a result for a client TF1, which exercises control over the content, but especially has a very specific target: 6-10 years (which today are knowledge of the original series on Gulli). The light that can bring the fans in their thirties on the following OLS is significantly different from the approach Our primary audience much younger: the series has rocked their childhood, and became a nostalgic phenomenon, which does not play on the same springs. That being said, and to reassure the fans, our desire is to keep all the ingredients which made the success of the original series:
- Paper with a series short documentary at the end
- Maintain consistency with the following information disclosed in the original series on the medallions, the Cities of Gold, etc..
- Heroes engaging in pure heart, they wonder about the world, their revolt against injustice, etc..
- The ambivalence of some adults
- The credibility of the historical context in relation to knowledge of the time, the événemetns historical, local customs, etc.. Maintaining the major focus on artifacts that may appear like magic in the eyes of the 16th [century] but all based on a scientific substrate that includes modern audience (eg condor / solar)
- A certain pattern of narration that leaves room for contemplative moments or poetic
- The axis of the initiatory quest even if the characters are shifting (search for father, for example)
This list is not exhaustive but shows our position without revealing the secrets of the series.
Furthermore, it is important to realize that in 25 years scriptwriting forms have evolved with the public and that can not be in something similar. While the challenge is to find the fine balance between the ingredients listed above that have made the success of the series and who care about the fans and a writing which corresponds to our audience today. The author dedicated to this task, Hadrian Soulez Lariviere, did a very good job indeed.
Also, be aware that all development is done in close collaboration with Jean Bernard Deyriès Chalopin and helping us find this balance and the program advisors of the chain [TF1] after writing thirtysomethings are fans of the series were keen to make a series of high quality.

On November 17, 2008, FNAC Montparnasse (Paris) hosted an autograph session with Mr. Bernard Deyriès, to celebrate the release of remastered by KAZE box. Obviously, questions were quickly diverted to the result of the Mysterious Cities of Gold as expected …
A small correction compared with what has been said, the three announced series should conclude the series (remember that it is mentioned in the first round, 7 Cities of Gold) as our heroes discover not three but six Cities of Gold over the past three seasons! For different geographic locations, the mystery remains intact (although Japan has often been mentioned by Jean Chalopin).
The support and commitment of TF1 have been a new emphasis: the chain wants to stay closer to the original series. On the technical side, the computer will replace the cels but the design will remain the same, with a touch of modernity. As stated by Bernard Deyriès, “Miyazaki has abandoned even the cellos, then …”
Side of dubbing, some voices have aged (25 years later!), Others have unfortunately disappeared … A casting will be held to find the specificity of each of the voices of characters from the first series to approach it as closely.
As a bonus, a dedication of Mr. Deyriès for site … and me!
16/11/2008: More details on the implementation of the Cities of Gold: six new cities of gold!
Since the confirmation of the entry into three new pre-season (see below), some additional information has been provided by Poussier, Director of Youth Programs at TF1. It has officially announced the commissioning of three new seasons Chalopin to John at a seminar on fiction youth held in EAEC (European Academy of Scripture Audiovisual) in Paris on 12 and November 13, 2008.
As already mentioned, the design is identical to that of the first series and we find the same characters and the same music as the original series.
Each episode is structured with a documentary at the end, as we had used (which in my opinion, has partly contributed to the originality and success of the series). While on the subject of three new seasons, our heroes must find six new Cities of Gold (two per season!).
As it is mentioned in the 1st round, 7 Cities of Gold around the world, these three seasons will be terminated series! What more? More details soon … here!
03/11/2008: Three new seasons Mysterious Cities of Gold confirmed by Jean Chalopin
To mark the 25th anniversary of the first broadcast of the series in France, Jean Chalopin, [producer of the first series and Group President MoviePlus, society holds the rights for the rest of the Mysterious Cities of Gold] has announced that the preproduction phase of a new series is underway! A video of John Chalopin was presented at the Chibi Japan Expo held in Paris in late November. Jean Chalopin, traveling in China, however, to reassure the fans: the actual production of this new series will begin in a year (end 2009) and should last for 18 months! The diffusion is therefore for the moment, not planned before 2011.
Incidentally, Deyriès Bernard, director and co-screenwriter of the first round, will also take part in this new series.
As for broadcasters, is finally the French channel TF1, which should support the project financially (which is not yet fully completed). So far, this project could not succeed for lack of support from a broadcaster in France (remember that the first series was broadcast on Antenne 2, current France2 and other channels of public service and currently on the channel Gulli available via DTT). It was time …
And to keep the best for last, TF1 interested 3 seasons of 26 episodes, each episode has a duration of 26 minutes, either a format similar to that of the first series, with episodes that merging with each other. For documentaries, which punctuates the end of each episode, nothing is decided yet, so it is not excluded from the review …
As has already been mentioned, the design should be very similar to the one we know, with perhaps in part, a little 3D. I will try, in the months that followed, finding a few sketches … but nothing has been done to date!
From next feature film project for cinema, which is spoken in a year or two, it is not abandoned but put aside to produce the new series (the feature was originally planned before the new series ). If successful in the dissemination of the new series, it’s a safe bet that the movie will be initiated.
And as always, I will keep you abreast of developments here, through the team MoviePlus, whom I thank once again.
The information below is prior to 2008 and are no longer valid.
Thank you to stick to the information dated from November 2008.
17/11/2007: News from the animated feature!
It felt less and less … and yet it seems that the financing of “remake” of the series as a feature film is finally completed! For proof, here is the translation of the article found on the site of the current rights-holders, namely the company Movie Plus, owned by Jean Chalopin.
[Top of translation]
The Mysterious Cities of Gold
Among all series produced in the early ’80s, The Mysterious Cities of Gold (Japanese: “Esteban, Taiyo no Ko”) is by far today the cult TV program around the world, especially in United Kingdom and in francophone countries, where the series is still played 25 years after its first broadcast. The Mysterious Cities of Gold is certainly the same animated series that has seen the greatest success in France.
Overview
From the creator of “Inspector Gadget”
A new version of 3D animated classic and timeless arrives
The Mysterious Cities of Gold is primarily the story of three extraordinary children alone in the world, seeking both their identity and their parents – three children, during their extraordinary journey, discovering not only the mysteries of a first City of Gold (from seven other cities being identical to the four corners of the globe), but also the mysteries of lost civilizations, and forge an unbreakable bond with them. They face innumerable obstacles on their way, because of the nature or the Conquistadors, and they can count on the support (motivated by self-interest) Captain Mendoza and his companions as well as using the Inca peoples and Maya, who see in them the messengers of the gods, and finally on the wisdom of the Empire of Mu, now extinct, whose secret technology allow our heroes to overcome many difficult situations. As to measure their progress, solving puzzle after puzzle, it appears that the Golden City they discover beacoup may offer more than just precious metal: an overview of the profound meaning of their lives.
The Mysterious Cities of Gold belongs to this group of stories to share, we never want to see end, and above all, we want to see and review. VHS, DVD and CD series are still, 25 years after the release of the series, including the best seller in their classes everywhere. We intend to make this long version of the series the greatest popular success in the history of animation, using his extraordinary impact between generations – men and women alike, as evidenced by the scores achieved by incredible this old series, and the growing number of fan clubs and sites created spontanémant in many countries.
Genre: Family Adventure
Format: 3D Animation / Format 35mm
Language: English
[End of ranslation]
If you did not always included in previous news, the animated feature 3D will be a resumption of the series that we know in order to “hang” new generations (and maybe for a second series if success is to go?). The film is scheduled for 2008 … no more info yet.
15/03/2007: Project MCO2: take stock!
It seems important to take stock of the current project led by Mr. Jean Bernard DEYRIES CHALOPIN and to remove any doubt at all of us. Firstly, the project is not following the series that we all revere, but somehow the same story as a feature film that will benefit from current technology in animation.
Note that all rights have been recovered. This procedure has proved longer than expected and took me almost three years. But there is another problem, which occurred more recently, a major investor pulled out, pushing the financing of the project and its credibility with chains that have embarked on the adventure: BBC and Canal +. It is therefore important to find a solution, it is not impossible that an appeal to the fans is launched in the coming months … The project is still ongoing, but it can really move. From what we know, testing the characters are going and the scenery will be in 3D (but on this last point, we do not learn anything really new). It is with great pleasure that lescitesdor.com reveals in this exclusive research (see below), we can only enjoy!
First trials for the feature!
But this is not the only good news of new developments are also under preparation. Indeed, a new box of the original series in the English language is being negotiated. Cabinet that will also re-mastered version (image and sound). A cabinet in French, also re-mastered version should also make its appearance. Be aware that the French cabinet will be a little longer to realize that the English version, but we can not only be more satisfied!
You may be wondering when will this famous result, which we expect both? And although he will still wait a bit, the feature being the current project. It will easily after being set up, prompting the chain to focus on the project.
Finally, the project team of the Mysterious Cities of Gold wishes to thank the fans for their moral support without which the project would probably have been abandoned. Support that must be even more now, given the recent release of the DVD “Esteban and Zia in search of the Seven Cities of Gold” which, remember, is that unfair competition and can in no way claim to be the result of the fabulous series that is the Mysterious Cities of Gold.
I invite you to discuss on the forum.

16/01/2007: Some clarifications
Veronique Luzy, the Group Chief Financial MoviePlus, informed me that the series was produced in co-production between NHK and CLT, NHK retaining all rights in Asia and the rights in the territories of the English language, including rights derived Thus the rights of figurines. Studio Studio Pierrot was a subcontractor. MoviePlus The group has won the right to NHK to exploit all rights NHK series on NHK and territories the right to make a feature film or a sequel based on the original series.
11/01/2007: Recent (good!) News on the front MCO2
The passage in 2007 was the occasion of many new diverse and varied. Since I’m not going to keep everything for myself, I offer you a quick summary …
For the project that interests us, namely the official sequel to the original series, as a feature film, things are a little released. Funding for the feature film is almost complete. More importantly, the rights of the series held by the Japanese (ie CTL and NHK), were recovered by Jean Chalopin at the end of 2006 (for info, Studio Pierrot has never owned the rights .. .). This step was crucial to hope that the movie so one day … Tests on the 3D characters are being …
Since nothing is completed yet, no specific date is set for the exit to our screens feature … but it will certainly wait until the fall of 2008 … which should also see the release of a limited set of unpublished figures and a limited edition of Grand Condor, articulated and gilded (2000 units).
Well, 2008 is not yet for tomorrow, we can also expect the spring 2007 a first set of 5 figures in resin and numbered limited edition (999 pieces): Esteban Mendoza, Tao and Zia Grand Condor (in the ‘order) … enough to break your piggy banks! It seems however that certain rights issues on the figures are not yet resolved (AK Video possess these rights until 31/12/2007).
On the other hand, the draft rights from the book The King’s Fifth has materialized in the form of a series Esteban Zia and the search for 7 Cities of Gold. DVDs are released in December 2006. There is some controversy about this series, I will not …
Well, that’s all ready for the moment, I will be releasing more info as and when they arrive and confirm. If I allow myself now to publish these details, is in good faith, because they come from reliable sources …
I hope this latest news will delight the fans who have waited many years … I invite you to join us on the forum (busy) to discuss: you will find full of friendly fans!
23/07/2006: Other new “mixed” live Jean Chalopin
In lack of fresh news from lontemps (see the news of 05/09/05), I decided to send a mail to Bernard and Jean Deyriès Chalopin. The latter replied, saying that the news is neither good nor bad but he’ll have to wait! The production budget is not high enough yet completed, especially given the reluctance of French channels to support the project!
Well OK, nothing too exciting yet but at least the project is ongoing … I’m quite surprised and angry against the attitude of France Television that broadcast and rebroadcast the series with audience success every time … I await your feedback on the forum and chat.
Note: At the request of its author, the reproduction of the mail was deleted.
