Commission Junction suckle on my account balance
A bad affiliate program is one that does everything in its power to make you feel like you've just paid a visit to an alcoholic, sausage fingered, proctologist.
In the good old days Commission Junction were quite good to me. I was doing reasonably well with them, largely on the back of their relationship with eBay. A couple of years ago, if you wanted to earn commission from eBay referrals, your only option was to go through Commission Junction.
While Commission Junction have a large number of partners, 99.9% of my revenue with them was generated via eBay. When eBay decided it was time to fly solo, and started there own publisher program, 99.9% of the money I would have made through Commission Junction was made via eBay directly instead. So, since eBay flew the Commission Junction coup, my Commission Junction earnings have been sporadic at best. Currently I'm only partnered with Musicians Friend, which generally offers high involvement, high value, products for sale. My last commission probably occurred earlier this year, and since then it's been quiet.
Last month I logged into my dashboard and noticed that my account balance had dropped from the previous month, and the month before that. Four months ago I had $47 in my account. Today I'm down to $7. Why? Here's what I found buried in the Contact Us >> Check FAQs section of the Commission Junction site.
If your account was charged a $10 fee it is because you have not generated any commissionable transactions for a six-month period. Publishers that have less than $10 in their account or a zero balance after six-months of activity automatically have their accounts deactivated. Because publishers can sign-up for a Commission Junction account for no charge, our system carries thousands of accounts that are either duplicates or never generate any activity. This makes it necessary to remove those accounts from the system so that it can work more efficiently for publishers and advertisers that are generating revenue.
So each month I'm being charged $10 for what exactly? Extra support? Help in turning around my poor performance? I'm not sure. All I do know is that I never received any correspondence from Commission Junction to tell me they were siphoning my account. Maybe it's there way of coping with the financial crisis? Whatever it is, it leaves me less than impressed.
Now, I may not be a big user of Commission Junction at the moment, but that is not to say I wont find something I want to promote in the future. With that said though, Commission Junction make it very difficult for me to want to continue on with them in the future. If I don't generate a commission this month, my account will finally reach zero, which will see my account deactivated. Surely I can do something to avoid deactivation? Lets check their FAQs some more...
How can I prevent my account from being closed for non-activity?
Commission Junction deactivates accounts for lack of performance (dormant account policy) if they have not generated any commissionable transactions for six consecutive months. To prevent your account from being deactivated, you can make a purchase from one of your advertisers to generate a commission.
So to avoid deactivation I should generate leads... from myself? Doesn't sound 100% kosher, and there's probably sub-clauses in the individual agreements you enter into with the actual advertisers that could end up seeing you booted from their programs?
Commission Junction is one of the larger affiliate programs around, which is why I guess they figure they can get away with such a dick move. For the big publishers I'm sure none of this really matters, but perhaps Commission Junction should consider that big publishers all need to start somewhere. By raising the middle finger to the minnows of today, they may be pissing off the killer whales of tomorrow.

Ouch! $10 per month charge is terrible. Especially when they supply the ads and earn a commission of that. *sigh*
Dude,
That was an awesome statement at the end. I just recently started trying to promote products through commission junction. I have had an account for awhile and I got that same message you did about deactivation. But to jack you for $10? What the hell is that nonsense? It is hard enough to generate precious affilliate income. Then just to charge you like that is bullshit!
The charging a $10 monthly fee is bad enough, but what I find worse is the arrogance of the company in that they don’t even seem to justify why they can charge you!?! If I’m paying them $10 a month shouldn’t I be getting something in return? Last time I checked, Commission Junction wasn’t a damn charity.
I just went through the same thing with the $10 jack. I had $17.94 and now it’s down to $7.94 cents. I call on Monday to have it deactivated so I can at least get something. They really should give you notice before taking the money out. I just hate these massive corporations that peck away at the innocent, small time individual. They must make a fortune from this scheme.
Ya, I’ve given at least $40 to CJ. Can I mark it off as a charitable contribution?
What sucks too is that my account was deactivated for inactivity probably several months ago without me knowing, yet, CJ kept serving adds on my website.
Yep they screwed me too. Same story… no notification so the ads just keep running, and the small amount of money I had in my account is all gone now. I’ll just be deactivating my account again my self this time. I’d rather give my visitors an ad free website than put up with this crap and make practically nothing.
This was why I never joined CJ. The minute I saw the ‘Dormant Accounts’ clause back in the late 1990s, I ran a mile. They never specified the amount all these years, so it’s interesting to know they are screwing people to the tune of $10 a month.
The sister company to CJ is Mediaplex, which a few weeks back hijacked my browser. Every time I went to Facebook, my browser directed me to Mediaplex. As far as I am concerned, I am staying away from any company associated with either of these.
My data feeds suddenly stopped working, so I visited the CJ site.
My account was deactivated for non use, funny I was just there a couple weeks back.
They sucked all the money out of my account and deactivated me.
I reactivated it because it gave me the option.
All my account money was gone!
Then if you try and print reports to see what they did and what you earned and they limit you to 120 day reports, so you cant see anything they did! Why have a calendar with years and months commission junction if we cannot use it?
Because your crooks..
Good bye Commission Junction forever.. Been with them for 10 years..
Hmmm, I have been low a few time but only had the 10 dollars pulled out from my acct one time. My ex wife was deactivated after they pulled her 6.48 after 2 years. A great promoter she was not!
My advice to you all is “KEEP AWAY FROM COMMISSION JUNCTION”.
Its a total waste of time and they eat your hard working profits/revenue in no time.
This affiliate network just sucks.
Just my 2 cents.
I’m still surprised that so many people “wonder why” Commission Junction pulls such dick moves (and by the way, these are exactly the kind of sketchy, predatory “inactivity fee” practices that recent federal legislation has BANNED and/or cracked down on hard, by credit card or gift card issuers).
Here’s the deal: Commission Junction COUNTS on the fact that the majority of its ads will be published by small publishers who will, individually, NEVER be able to collect a dime of their affiliate payments. This creates, collectively, a HUGE and steady income stream for Commission Junction, and helps CJ offer better deals to their large customers–both advertisers and publishers.
I have heard some shortsighted defense of Commission Junction by people who actually think the failure to pay out to small affiliates is justified by the cost Commission Junction incurs to its bandwidth by hosting the images used in these ads, and tracking the clicks. “Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaa…” Yes, that’s the sound of Commission Junction laughing all the way to the bank with millions of cumulative dollars from small affiliates.
Commission Junction is very pleased for its massive-income-generating small publishers to continue to publish CJ ads, banners, and links long after their accounts have been made dormant, and then deactivated. Are you kidding? After they take every penny under $100 that a paid-by-paper-check affiliate has in his/her account, Commission Junction still gets months and months of free advertising out of these small affiliates who often don’t even realize that they’ve been deactivated!
What can you do? Well, you can stop using Commission Junction. And if the advertisers you like are not total industry giants, you can lobby them to switch to Google Affiliate or any better program. You might be surprised, but this works. In fact, a lot of mid-sized advertisers are actually pretty angry to discover that the money they paid to Commission Junction to pay affiliates never even got to the affiliates, but went right into Commission Junction’s deep, dishonest pockets. I mean, how would you feel if you were an advertiser and you gave Commission Junction a million dollars that supposedly got passed on to affiliates as their commission on your sales, plus you paid CJ some percentage for administering the whole process, and then you found out that $850,000 of that million never went to any affiliate because Commission Junction took it out of the affiliates’ account, and instead of returning it to you as “unpayable commissions,” they just kept it for themselves!
Commission Junction sucks!
Yep, November 2010 and they are still crooks. I also had 10 dollars taken out. Somebody needs to take them out!!
In my own experiences, I used CJ.com for 7 years and made some good money. More recently, I received an email stating that my account would be closed because I didn’t follow the rules. And within minutes my CJ account was locked and couldn’t be accessed. Furthermore, they requested that I answer their emails but they also locked the email address so I was not able to answer. And all my answers were sent back to me.
After further investigations on my part and out point since the last years on my sales I found the following:
During the period of Sept, Oct and Nov 2009, I was making good sales with one of my merchant like $60 – $120 a day. Then certainly toward the end of Nov 2009 the sales stopped to $0 while my clicks and impressions were still going up. I contacted CJ support and told them about this situation and they responded that they could agree more with the crash and that they will investigate. They did and found nothing wrong with their systems. But what could I do to verify their statements? Nothing!
Another CJ merchant, I use to make good money back in 2006 certainty stopped making sales for about 1 year and half. Despite the clicks stats still going up but no sales. Then this CJ Merchant decided to leave CJ.com last year and went to another affiliate Network. I signed up with this new affiliate Network and joined this merchant. Believe or not my sales went up the roof and still are going up to this day.
One other similar example from another sport merchant that decided to leave CJ. But prior leaving, since I was a good affiliate for them sent me a private email stating that they couldn’t work with CJ anymore and they wanted me to join them on their private Affiliate Network, which I did. Using this new Merchant Network as opposed to CJ, I double my sales on a monthly basis.
To make a story short as per the above, one can see that CJ system either at the corporate level or individual affiliate manager are dishonest. This is simple and very straight forward facts.
So the question remind since the last 7 years using 100′s of CJ merchants how much money never came in my pocket? No idea…
But for sure, I know for a fact that somewhere along the line that some affiliate managers are keeping the sales from affiliate to themselves and perhaps the heads of CJ.com most probably don’t even know about it.
Personally, I do not blame CJ as a company. I mean, there are no doubt in my mind that few bad apple are working in their system ripping off affiliates that work hard to get some extra money. And I will believe that the corporate at CJ don’t even know about.
Anyway, I still waiting for my last payment from them which I earned but I not sure if I will ever get it…
ps: CJ if you read this, you should investigate your own back yard as per the above facts you are being betrayed and many affiliates are too.
ps: I know that there are many instances and examples like this. Affiliate if you have similar situations happening to YOU gather the facts and speak out LOAD. You can make a difference…
