From the moment I first saw "Gone in 60 seconds" I was in love... this time, I'm not talking about Angelina Jolie, I'm talking about Eleanor. When I'm rich I'm going to buy myself a Shelby Mustang GT500 fastback coupe. Based on the expected prices of a couple up for auction in Sydney though, I might just have to wait a while!

Audi have unveiled their new S5 sports coupe simultaneously at the Melbourne International Motor Show and the Geneva Motor Show.

The S5 boasts an eight-cylinder engine with a rated power output of 260 kW (354 bhp). Its peak torque is 440 Nm, which it delivers at 3,500 rpm. The Audi S5 can hit the 100km/h mark within 5.1 seconds. » Read the rest of the entry..

Besides the Mondeo, another big announcement from Ford at the Melbourne Motor Show was the launch of the Ford Fiesta XR4. President of Ford Australia, Tom Gorman, was on hand for the launch.

"Fiesta XR4 will be on sale before the end of the second quarter and we are confident this junior hot hatch, with its combination of European styling, German engineering and outstanding driving dynamics, will take the class by storm," said President of Ford Australia, Tom Gorman.

Powered by a specially modified version of Ford’s 2.0 litre Duratec 16-valve engine, the XR4 delivers 110kW of power and 190Nm of torque.

At 110kW I'm not sure that I'd be going so far as to call the XR4 a performance car, but with it's relatively light weight it's guaranteed to have a fair bit of zip. The first thing I noticed about the car was it's racing stripes. I love the racing stripes, but then, I am a traditionalist. The racing stripes will be available as an option.

Safety wise it was pleasing to see that the XR4 comes fitted with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), driver and front passenger airbags, side curtain airbags and side thorax airbags. In this respect, Ford are taking a big step forward in the small car segment, leaving the Holden's glorified toaster (the Barina), a long way back in the safety stakes.

All up the Fiesta XR4 looks like a tight little package and looks set to do battle with similar sized competitors such as the Renault Clio Sports and the Volkswagen Polo GTi.

The Melbourne International Motor Show is now officially under way. This morning saw a number of ‘new’ products launched onto the Australian market. It will be interesting to see how the show is covered in the media, as from where I was standing, there weren't many show stopping acts this year.

The media preview morning opened with the Mitsubishi unveiling of what is to be the new Lancer. On display was one of the sports concepts. Interestingly, Mitsubishi have dropped the sedan styling of previous models to incorporate more of a ‘hot hatch’ vibe into the new unit. As a whole the vehicle cut a sleek figure, and based on what I saw, is destined to shift quite a few units upon its release. » Read the rest of the entry..

With the Melbourne International Motor Show fast approaching, car manufacturers are falling all over one another trying to get media attention for their product. At an event like the Motor Show however, practicality and fuel efficiency take a back seat to flash and glamour. One car that's sure to attract some attention is Audi’s new R8 sportscar will also be on display in Melbourne, ahead of its September 2007 market introduction in Australia.

Audi report that around two-thirds of the company’s 2007 allocation have already been pre-sold. The R8 is expected to retail at around $250,000 ($AUD). For that sort of money you would be expecting your fair share of glitz and glamour I'd say!
