Wanted movie review

Monday, January 5th, 2009

I missed seeing Wanted at the movies, but on the weekend I finally got around to catching it on DVD. I found it to be an entertaining action movie, however my gripe with it was that it had very little in common with the graphic novel of which it was supposedly based on.

Wanted, the mini-series written by Mark Millar, is in my top 10 favorite graphic novels of all time. It's funny, thought provoking and entertaining. With that said, the film version had a lot to live up to. Here's my review of the graphic novel Wanted.

Wanted, the film, follows white collar office drone, Wesley Gibson's transformation into one of the worlds top assassins, working for "The Fraternity" dispatching those that 'fate' determines need to be removed from the playing field. The Fraternity are a guild of assassins that have existed for centuries, that take their kill orders from a binary code printing loom. Why? I don't know.

I originally thought that I'd write about the differences between the film and the graphic novel. However, on reflection, I'm not sure that there's much point. Similarities between the two are few and far between. In that respect, the film was somewhat disappointing.

Like the comic, the film opens with the assassination of an assassin, and an introduction into the daily grind experienced by Wesley Gibson. His life is dull and repetitive, and will have you drawing initial comparisons to Fight Club. After the first 10-15 minutes though, the comic and the film head off in completely different directions.

I can understand that some elements from the comic would be difficult to pull off, without causing a panic at the censors office, but surely the core of the story could have been retained?

Why the film makers would decide to stray so far from the source material is beyond me, however I can say that one of the things that saves the film from being just another action romp with the of director Timur Bekmambetov. Bekmambetov is the man behind the Russian film adaptation of Night Watch, and the guy certainly has a keen sense of cinematic style. The other major positive for the film is that it features Angelina Jolie. Enough said.

Watched independently of the comic, the film is an entertaining pop corn flick. Compared to the comic however, it doesn't quite make the grade.

Captain Australia

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

It's no secret that I'm a big fan of comic books (I just finished reading Batman: Face the Face).

Anyway, today I stumbled across the "Create Your Own Superhero" application on the Marvel Kids website. It took me a good minute and a half to get over my excitement, after which time I sat down and created a couple of Swollen Super Heroes.

First Swollen Hulk. I like to think Swollen Hulk would be a stylish looking dude, and self conscious about his green skin tone to the point he applies bucket loads of fake tan.

Swollen Hulk would be a real hit with the ladies. Anyway, I found Swollen Hulk to be a little disappointing, so I set about creating the best hero never created...
CAPTAIN AUSTRALIA!

In my mind, Captain Australia would wear an Akubra and a blue chesty Bonds singlet. He'd carry a shot gun so he could impress his mates, and his utility belt would hold two emergency cans of VB (that's beer people). He'd wear jeans, because jeans can double as casual wear or formal wear, depending on the occasion.

I reckon Captain Australia is awesome. He'd tell all the bad guys to just bugger off so he could go drinking with his mates. He'd turn up to fight crime in his V8 ute with his trusty side kick Bluey, the Blue Heeler, by his side.

Random geek stuff

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

This post is really nothing more than a miscellaneous collection of stuff, so prepare yourself...

If you're one of the people, like me, that found Alien vs. Predator 2 a joyful romp in the ongoing Alien/Predator love story, then this little clip will give you another opportunity to geek out like there's no tomorrow.

It's in German, and there are no subtitles, so I have absolutely no idea what they are saying, but then, that's part of the appeal.

Continuing the sci-fi geek theme, for some reason, this picture always makes me giggle like a school girl.

Thanks to Lee, the Quit Your Day Job guru, for "interviewing" me. It's a world first.

I also finally got around to opening my guitar effects forum the other day. Only a couple of members so far, but hopefully it builds quickly so I don't talk to myself.

In other news I started watching the new J.J. Abrams show Fringe the other night. I've seen the first three episodes so far. I really enjoyed the first pilot, but the second two episodes didn't quite grab me as much as the first. It still has my interest, but I'm hoping it can get back to the standard that the pilot episode showed that it could reach.

I finished reading Bullseye: Greatest Hits last night and wrote a quick review/summary on the Comicologist.

Coming soon: Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2

Friday, July 18th, 2008

I heard rumors that this game was on the drawing board but I had no idea that its development was so far down the track. I loved the first Marvel: Ultimate Alliance game, and if the sequel picks up where that one left off then it should be a cracker.

For comic geeks the first Marvel: Ultimate Alliance game it is a must, and is the only game I own both an Xbox and Xbox 360 version of. Word on the street is that Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 will be out some time in the third quarter of 2008.

Nice... now I need a cold shower...

The Incredible Hulk movie review

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

After seeing the new Incredible Hulk movie I'm glad to report that it went a long way toward righting the wrongs committed by the 2003 Ang Lee atrocity. Edward Norton was excellent as Bruce Banner, and a much better fit for the character than Eric Bana was. Banner is weedy, vulnerable, but underneath it all, you can tell he's got some hardcore repressed anger issues.

The story starts with Banner on the run, and hiding from the US military, and trying to find a cure for his little problem. It's not long before he's tracked down, and following a tussle with some crack special forces, including ring in Tim Roth, Banner Hulk's up, busts loose and head for home. (more...)
